# Cemetery and plaque records

> Two checkboxes that answer questions congregations get asked constantly.

Each yahrzeit record has two simple markers:

**Cemetery.** The person is buried in a cemetery your community keeps track of.

**Plaque.** There is a memorial plaque for them in your building.

They are plain yes-or-no boxes, ticked when you create or edit a record.

## Why they earn their place

These two facts get asked about far more often than their simplicity suggests:

* A family asks whether their grandmother has a plaque, because they are thinking about buying one.
* You are preparing a Yizkor list and want the names with plaques in the building.
* Someone is planning a cemetery visit and wants to know who is buried there.
* The board asks how many plaques are placed and how much wall space is left.

Without these markers, each of those is a trip to a filing cabinet or a phone call to whoever has been there longest.

## Filtering by them

Filter the yahrzeit list by either marker to get the list you need: everyone with a plaque, everyone buried in your cemetery, or both together.

  Combine with the observance date to produce something genuinely useful, such as everyone with a plaque whose yahrzeit falls in the next month.

## What they deliberately do not do

They are markers, not a cemetery management system. They do not record which plot, which row, which section, plaque wording, or what was paid.

If you need that level of detail, put it in the record's **notes** field. Notes are free text and only your staff see them. "Plaque row 3, panel B, placed 2019" in notes is a perfectly good answer for a congregation of this size.

## Filling them in for existing records

If you are importing history, you probably do not know these for every record. That is fine. Leave them unticked and fill them in as you learn.

A practical approach: whenever a family gets in touch about a yahrzeit, take thirty seconds to confirm and tick the boxes. Within a year or two your records fill themselves in through ordinary conversation.
